Seaforth Native Ian Doig Qualifies For Senior U.S. Open

Seaforth native Ian Doig is one of five Canadians that is getting ready to compete in the this week's US Senior Open in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

It's at the Broadmoor.

And Doig says it's been a long wait.

"I've been trying for the U.S. Open or Senior Open for 38 years. I went down to Battle Creek Michigan, and I think it was around 78 guys for two spots, I was fortunate enough to shoot a 3-under par 69, which got me into a playoff, and there was 3 of us left for the two spots, and luckily I went par-par and won the spot."

Doig credited part of his qualification to a decision on his last hole of his qualifying round. A par-5, and he could have made the green in two shots.

"But it would bring a lot of trouble, and I looked at my caddie Taylor who did a great job, we talked about it and discussed it, and instead of going for the green in 2, I decided to lay up and let my wedge do my work for me. It had done all day. I layed it up to a nice yardage, I hit my wedge to 4 feet and hit my put for birdie, and that got me into the playoffs."

Doig's first round tee time on Thursday is at 8:45 a.m.
