Fire officials are reminding homeowners of the potential dangers of house fires and sending out a safety message this Holiday Season.
North Huron Fire officials are driving the message home this Christmas with a few tips to help keep you and your family safe.
Real Christmas Trees should be watered daily to keep them from drying out. North Huron Fire Prevention Officer James Marshall says a dry Christmas Tree can ignite instantly causing everything in the room to burn, creating a deadly situation.
"So it can go from nothing wrong in that room to everybody would be dead in about a minute because that's flashing, you're looking at about 800 degrees in the room, so that's not a survivable fire," says Marshall.
Homeowners are reminded to make sure all smoke alarms are working properly and to have a fire safety plan in place to ensure all family members can get out safely in the event of a fire.
A few other tips include:
- Check all sets of lights before decorating
- Make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms
- Use extension cords wisely
- Give space heaters space
- When you go out, blow out all candles
- Keep matches and lighters out of the sight and reach of children
- Consuming alcohol while cooking can be dangerous
- Don't leave the stove unattended
