Grey Bruce Health Coalition survey shows support for public health care

A survey into the Ford Government's plan to allow certain private health services attracted 9,889 votes in Grey Bruce.

Grey Bruce Health Coalition Spokesperson Brenda Scott said locally just 1.3 per cent voted yes when asked "Do you want your public hospital services to be privatized for for-profit hospitals and clinics?"

Scott believes the results show the vast majority are against privatizing healthcare. She claimed privatization will create a more severe staff shortage in the public system as more people decide to work in the more lucrative private sector.

"There is undeniably a nursing shortage," she said. "You know when you underpay nurses, when you treat them badly, when you pass bills like 124, naturally they're going to feel demoralized and I think that contributed to a lot of resignations."

She also pointed out the Ford government has not spent all of its available healthcare funding.

"In every hospital, there are operating rooms that are sitting unused most of the day because they don't have funding to run them," she explained. "And yet the government hasn't spent all the money they've been given for health care. We could fund those operating rooms again."

Scott said they also had a second question on the ballot in Arran-Elderslie.

"We asked voters if they wanted the Chesley District Memorial Hospital to remain open as a public hospital with a 24/7 emergency and I think we got 692 yeses on that one and three no's," she explained

Scott added the Ford government never mentioned privatization plans during the last election campaign.

"It was never brought forward as part of the platform for the party. And even when they were asked, do you plan to privatize health care? They denied that they would," she said.

Scott insisted they will not give up their fight against privatization.
