Zoning amendments will allow hundreds of new housing options in Owen Sound

Owen Sound city council has paved the way for three new housing developments.

Council approved three zoning amendments Monday which will allow for a mix of new housing in walkable locations.

A two-phase, 477-unit SmartCentres development of apartments and townhouses with parking will move forward at 1555 18th Avenue East. The project is located east of the Grey Bruce Hospice. The developer plans to create a buffer between the two properties with a solid fence, acoustic barrier, and significant landscaping.

Property at 1043 and 1057 3rd Avenue East will be home to a 40-unit apartment building located in the City’s River District. It will offer ground floor retail and all units will be affordable. The County of Grey and Lutheran Outreach Ministries both provided funding for the project. The developers have an application for funding awaiting approval through the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

The third zoning amendment will allow see a building at 1032 2nd Avenue West converted into a duplex with two residential units (one on each floor).

"We are pleased that investments in residential developments are continuing to move forward, which will further add to the range of Owen Sound’s walkable and transit-friendly housing options,” said Mayor Ian Boddy.
