Owen Sound Police: Keep an eye out for distraction thefts

Owen Sound Police are warning the public of distraction thefts after a woman had her wallet stolen on Saturday.

The woman told police she had just entered her vehicle in an east side parking lot when an unknown woman got her attention by knocking on the window. The suspect told the victim that there was something wrong with her rear tire and produced a tack in her hand. While the victim was distracted a second female suspect entered the car and stole the victim’s wallet.

She realized the theft about a half hour later when she learned that her credit card had been used to make a purchase totaling $800.

Police say there are reports of similar incidents occurring across Southern Ontario, noting that perpetrators appear to target individuals who carry purses or parcels.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Owen Sound Police at 519-376-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
