In 2022, there were 359 deaths on OPP patrolled roads. This marks the highest death count in 16 years.
As Canada Road Safety Week begins on May 16, police are looking to make the country's roads the safest in the world.
"Every year, a significant number of road deaths are linked to motorists who decide to drive aggressively, distracted, under the influence of alcohol/drugs, or fatigued, with little or no thought about the unimaginable consequences that await them -- the loss of human life," said a statement from the OPP.
In an effort to lessen the death count, officers are looking to target poor and careless driving, including seatbelt safety.
The police say drivers make some of the most important decisions of their lives when they get behind the wheel.
Canada Road Safety Week runs until May 22.
