Kincardine hopes to begin repairs on Bruce Avenue in April

A section of Bruce Avenue in Kincardine is in need of repairs after falling victim to the spring thaw. According to the municipality, the road had be closed due to damage caused by winter maintenance, followed by pothole season.

A section of Bruce Avenue from Highway 21 to Wieck Boulevard will need repairs after deterioration left the road in very poor condition. The plan is to pulverize the asphalt and make that segment gravel, temporarily. But work on that cannot begin until the weather improves.

Manager of Operations Corey Voisin, said his team is looking at a mid-April completion for repairs and opening of the road.

“It’s been pretty crazy this season, with snowstorms one day and mild weather with rain only a few days later. Bruce Avenue was in bad shape near the beginning of February between the freezing, thawing, rains and heavy loads that travel it,” he explained.

“We have Minimum Maintenance Standards set out for us by the province,” added Voisin. “After looking at many ways to repair, the safest and most feasible option for us to meet these standards in 2023 is to pulverize the asphalt in this section and make a segment of the road temporarily gravel.”

While the road is temporarily gravel, crews will apply calcium chloride and water for dust control. Staff have asked that the restoration of Bruce Avenue to urban standards be part of the 2024 capital budget.

“We want to thank the residents and motorists for their patience and understanding,” said Voisin. “We’re working to get Bruce Avenue open, but only once it’s safe to do so.”
