Kitchen fire leaves one injured in Owen Sound

One person suffered from burns after cooking oil caught fire on the stove at an Owen Sound home.

Owen Sound Fire and Emergency Services were called to 1195 6th Avenue West just after 8 a.m. Thursday morning. In an attempt to extinguish the fire, an occupant tried to move the burning pot of oil but was burned during the process. The person was transported to hospital by Grey County EMS.

The individuals suffered burns to the arms and feet.

"When you are cooking stay in the kitchen. If a fire starts on the stove top do not move the pot. Use a lid or a portable fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire if it is safe to do so. Moving the pot can result in personal injuries or fire spread throughout your home. Cooking with grease is always dangerous and should be avoided," warned a release from Owen Sound Fire and Emergency.

Firefighters were called to the same building earlier this month, also during the breakfast hours for reports of a kitchen fire.

Residents should leave their unit when a fire occurs in their unit. The door needs to be closed to prevent smoke and fire spread. Residents should activate the fire alarm and dial 911 from a safe location.
