Alert bank employee averts scam in St. Marys

Stratford Police credit staff at the Bank of Montreal in St. Marys for recognizing a customer was being scammed.

The victim was stopped from withdrawing several thousand dollars in what is called the Grandparent Scam.

Police are warning that incidents of that scam are on the rise in the region. Typically, scammers call their victim posing as a grandchild in trouble and in desperate need of money. The scammer also asks the victim not to tell anyone.

Police have warned people who receive that kind of call or message to never offer any information to he caller.  Instead, people should ask the caller personal questions about things only their grandchild would know. Then hang up the phone, and ask a family member where that grandchild is right now. Never send gift cards. Instead, call Police.
