Trudeau's approval rating grows while Poilievre struggles to connect with women voters

The leader of the Official Opposition is "provoking more reaction [than] his predecessors, but perhaps not in the way he may want."

That according to a new survey by the polling firm Angus Reid.

The survey found 15 per cent of respondents have an "unfavourable" view of Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, while 38 per cent have a "very unfavourable" view of him.

His predecessors at the same time in their respective tenures were viewed more favourably, with Stephen Harper enjoying majority positive sentiment during his time at Stornoway - the official residence of the federal Opposition leader.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is viewed positively by 42 per cent of respondents, up five points since the last survey.

There is an increasing gender divide when it comes to support for the two leaders. Only 23 per cent of women view Poilievre favourably as compared to 44 per cent of men. Thirty-five per cent of men view Trudeau favourably compared to half (50 per cent) of women.

The survey also found Canadians are heading into the new year worried about the overwhelming cost of living and the crisis in the healthcare system. Those two issues were identified as top priorities in every region of the country.
