'Canuckstorians' celebrate Huron's hometown heroes

Students from the Avon Maitland District School Board enrichment program and the 1st Bayfield Guides have created the Huron County Museum’s Young "Canuckstorians" film series celebrating Huron County's hometown heroes.

“They got to choose what topic in local history they wanted to shed more light on and then they recorded their script. And so they had ten videos featuring different significant people or events in the history of Huron County," explained Sinead Cox, Curator of Engagement & Dialogue.

Notable people and events featured in the films include Exeter-native Harriet Brooks, who changed the face of science for generations to come; the 2011 tornado that devastated Goderich and surrounding areas; and Wingham-native Alice Munro, who won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2013. The videos were recorded in partnership with video producer Mickey Maple.

“So we're having a premier gala event so we can show the videos on the big screen in the museum theatre with the kids and their families and our sponsors invited to come and the general public," said Cox. "So we'll have some snacks, we'll have some trivia on the ten stories that the kids chose.”

That event takes place on November 26 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. The videos are also available on the Huron County Museum's YouTube channel.
