Applications open for free PSW certificate program

The Avon Maitland District School Board’s Centre for Employment & Learning is now accepting registrations for their second free Personal Support Worker certification program.

PSW program lead, Erin Jones, says they're thrilled to be able to train up to forty new PSWs for their local health care partners.

Jones says it’s a part time program. “It involves one online day each week, one day of some independent work and then another day where the students will be either in our classroom or in a long term care home learning skills. The program starts November 7th and it ends September 16th,” said Jones.

“The first few weeks of the program they'll be doing skill courses, things like first aid, CPR, central persuasions training, feeding course, things like that and then starting in January, they will be in a long term care home one day a week, with their instructors, in small groups, learning hands on,” added Jones.

Jones says when they finish the program, they will have a PSW certificate and be ready to work as a Personal Support Worker in long term care homes, hospitals, or community agencies.

Jones adds, the fifteen-hundred dollar registration fee is waived, the student can earn just over five-thousand dollars during the co-op component of the course, no high school diploma is required and credits received during the course can count towards a high school diploma if the student doesn't already have one.
