Two South Simcoe police officers killed in the line of duty have been identified

We now know the identities of two South Simcoe Police Service officers who died in a line-of-duty shooting in Innisfil on the evening of Tuesday, October 11.

At a media conference on the afternoon of Wednesday, October 12 at Innisfil Town Hall, South Simcoe Police Service Chief John Van Dyke identified the two officers who were shot responding to a domestic incident about 7:55 p.m Tuesday night.

"Upon arrival, two officers were shot inside the home. The suspect was later pronounced deceased following an interaction with our police officers. The wounded officers were rushed to a local hospital by emergency run, where one of the officers died. The other officer was airlifted to a Toronto trauma centre where later this morning he succumbed to his injuries" said Van Dyke.

"It is with profound sadness that I announce the death of Constable Devon Northrup and Constable Morgan Russell. Words cannot describe our grief," he continued.

VanDyke said Constable Northrup was 33-years-old and a six year member of the service while 54-year-old Constable Russel was a 33 year veteran.

The suspect in the shooting was killed during an engagement with members of the South Simcoe Police.

The Special Investigations Unit and York Regional Police are investigating the shootings.

Police said Northrup was working with the community mobilization and engagement unit and also served as a member of the mental health crisis outreach team and the emergency response unit.

The force said Russell was a trained crisis negotiator and was assigned to uniform patrol.
