For the second weekend in a row, a rumoured unsanctioned car rally failed to materialize in Goderich.
Huron OPP and town officials blocked off nearly all access to Courthouse Square Friday evening and maintained a highly visible presence throughout the day Saturday in anticipation of the rally.
Physical barriers and heavy machinery were used to prevent vehicles from entering the square from every road except Kingston and West streets.
As of 8 p.m. Saturday, the rumoured car rally had not descended on the town.
"At this point it has not materialized," said OPP Constable Jamie Stanley. "Access to the Square remains restricted to only Kingston and West Streets."
The feared rally was expected to be similar to one held last month in Wasaga Beach that ended with nearly 200 charges being laid and two police cruisers damaged. Participants perform burnouts and donuts raising concern for public safety.
"We welcome visitors to Goderich and into the County of Huron, but for these unsanctioned events, we don’t want them here." Jason Younan, Huron OPP detachment commander inspector, said in a video posted to Twitter earlier in the day.
Younan stated in no uncertain terms unsafe and illegal acts on the roads would not be tolerated.
This was the second straight weekend police had taken precautions in anticipation of the unsanctioned event.
