Food banks continue to be pressed for service

The Executive Director of the Huron County Food Bank Distribution Centre says the high cost of essentials like housing, food and fuel is forcing more people to use food banks.

Mary Ellen Zielman says they go into different communities with their mobile truck too and they're seeing their numbers are still increasing there. She says the number of families they're serving doubled last year, so, she says there continues to be a great need and that need continues to increase.

“We go into different communities too, with our mobile truck, we're seeing that our numbers are still increasing there. They doubled last year in the amount of families that we were serving, so, certainly the need continues to be great and continues to rise,” said Zielman.

Zielman says the rising costs of rent, fuel and groceries doesn't leave a lot for groceries and they're finding that even two-parent working families are struggling to make ends meet.

Zielman says the increased demand is putting pressure on the county's food banks.

But she says people can help.

“People right now have a chance to support the distribution centre by attending our gala, which is on August the 4th at the Libro Community Hall in Clinton. People can purchase tickets and have an evening of fun while raising some money for the food bank.”
