The Member of Parliament for Bruce-Grey-Owen Sound and a Teeswater man helped save another man's life at a BBQ in Chesley recently.
Alex Ruff confirms he was attending the Bruce County Beef Farmers' BBQ in Chesley last week, and provided assistance as a man choked on a piece of meat.
Ruff, a retired colonel in the Canadian Armed Forces, leapt into action and began performing the Heimlich Maneuver on the man.
Ruff was eventually joined by Teeswater firefighter Trevor Bell, who took over performing the Heimlich.
Ruff says "(Bell) showed up, and he took over. He kept doing it, and the gentleman was still having trouble breathing, but we got him on the ground into the recovery position, and eventually he coughed up a big piece of beef."
"I just happened to be one of the people there. It was a team effort. There was a lot of other people there, including some former nurses helping to take his pulse and make sure we were doing everything we could, and eventually he was ok" added Ruff.
Coincidentally, Ruff is hosting a BBQ himself in Chesley on Sunday, July 24th, bringing back a traditional event that was held annually by former MP Larry Miller. It will be held from 2-4 p.m. at the Chesley Community Park Kinsman Pavilion.
