Electric Vehicle charging station coming to Walkerton

Westario Power, Bruce Power, and the Municipality of Brockton have formed a new partnership. They’ve announced that the first Electric Vehicle (EV) charging stations of their Lead the Charge initiative are on track to be installed in the Municipality of Brockton this summer.

Bruce Power President and CEO, Mike Rencheck, says this is an important step in offsetting carbon emissions and expanding clean energy use.

“When you look at the cost of EV charging, it’s relatively inexpensive compared to a litre of gasoline or diesel fuel. I think as we look to the future, and want to attract people into the area for tourism, having EV charging stations will make a difference,” said Rencheck. “The Nuclear Innovation Institute’s 'Plugging In' report highlighted the need to improve EV access in our area and we are proud to be doing our part in making this a reality.”

Currently, there are only 45 accessible stations across the three counties that combined are home to more than 200,000 people.

“Our collaboration with Bruce Power and the Municipality to bring EV charging stations to Brockton is another example of our commitment to community prosperity,” said Jenny Alfandary, President and CEO of Westario Power. “Through this partnership, we are living up to our mission of powering people’s lives, while also responding to climate change and supporting the transition to Net Zero.”

In addition to the Walkerton Community Centre site, Brockton is also considering charging stations at the Elmwood Community Centre and the Cargill Community Centre to serve EV users across the community.

“I am excited about the opportunity to bring a clean energy option to Brockton, which fulfills our community’s vision of environmental integrity and progressive economic development,” said Mayor Peabody. “Council will diligently finalize plans in the weeks ahead that will allow us to get the stations up and running.”
