Police caution safety this holiday weekend

As the unofficial start to summer, this May long weekend will be full of celebrations.

But South Bruce OPP Constable Kevin Martin hopes travelers keep safety in mind also, as roadways will see an influx of motorists.

“Let’s follow those rules of the road. The OPP ‘Big Four’, sober driving, put that cell phone down and focus on the road, watch your speed, don’t tailgate, make sure your seatbelt is on. We’ve been saying that stuff for years, and that does work.”

Martin reminds those using boats that life jackets are your best friend.

“On the May long weekend, the temperature of the water [in Lake Huron] is not warm, trust me, so that inflicts a lot of problems. You have less than one minute of muscle control should you end up in the water. If you get in a car, you put your seatbelt on. First step of getting on a boat, you put that life jacket on.”

Impaired driving, be it by drugs or alcohol, is something Martin says is never excusable, and laws must be followed whether you’re driving a car, boat or ATV.

Martin adds residents will see an increased police presence on roads as they try to help keep the community safe.
