Hydrant flushing underway in Owen Sound

The City of Owen Sound will be performing annual hydrant flushing between now and September.

A media release from the city said flushing fire hydrants each year ensures they are operational, and improves water quality.

Residents may see low water pressure, or cloudy or rusty water while the flushing is being done in their part of the city. This is normal and expected when flushing older cast iron watermains.

The city has asked residents to run a cold water tap for 5-30 minutes to clear the water. If that does not work, they can call the Water Department at 519-376-4274.

The flushing will begin in the areas nearest the Water Treatment Plant, and proceed gradually to the system’s outer limits. The City of Owen Sound Water system has approximately 650 fire hydrants.

The City of Owen Sound received a perfect score (100%) for drinking water quality from the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) for 2021.

The fire hydrants have coloured reflective rings that indicate fire flow. The red is the lowest, and the blue is the highest.
