Canada is now the first country to include data on transgender and non-binary people with the release of its latest round of census data from Statistics Canada.
The latest census asked people for their gender at birth and included a new question on gender.
Transgender or non-binary people account for one in 300 people aged 15 and older.
For Gen Z -- those born 1997 to 2006 -- the number of people who identify as trans or non-binary is higher at 0.79 per cent, while just over a half-a-per-cent of millennials see themselves as trans or non-binary. Only 0.19 per cent of Gen Xers and 0.15 per cent of baby boomers identify as trans or non-binary.
Stats Can says in a release that over time, the acceptance and understanding of gender and sexual diversity has evolved and young people may be more comfortable than older generations in reporting their gender identity.
