Ontario NDP campaign platform promises to fix things that matter most

The Ontario NDP party has released its campaign platform for the June provincial election. NDP leader Andrea Horwath said her the party would help make life more affordable.

"We're going to tackle the cost of living, make sure you don't have to shell out for necessities like prescription drugs and dental care. Go after speculators who drive up housing costs for everyone else. We're going to build more affordable homes," she said.

"And help folks with their down payment so they can buy their first home," she added. "We're going to control skyrocketing rents, and protect tenants. We're going to make sure that people have good jobs that pay the bills."

The campaign platform promised to fix health care, seniors care, and improve mental health supports covered by OHIP.

"The healthcare system is broken, and people deserve to have access to the healthcare that they need. So that means 10,000 nurses, and 30,000 PSWs. We're going to make sure that kids in our schools get the support they need, especially coming out of COVID. I think COVID showed us just how broken everything is," she explained.

Horwath said higher taxes for those earning over $200,000 annually will help pay for some of the promises. But Horwath wanted to see the provincial budget before releasing further details of the costing of their plan.

"So when it comes to a full costing of our plan, once we see the budget we'll be able to provide those numbers," she continued.

"This is our vision to make life better for people in Ontario now, and finally start to fix the things that matter most, for today, and for generations to come," she concluded.
