Sunset Golf Course near Goderich sold

The Sunset Golf Course, north of Goderich, has been sold.

Gary Gravett says the course was sold on March 22nd to four business people from the Oakville – Mississauga area.

His daughter, Ashley, is the head golf professional and has taken over as General Manager. While Kirk Stewart, his son-in-law, is staying on as Superintendent.

All remaining staff are returning.

Gavett says, essentially, they just want to keep running it the way he ran it for 19 years.

He shared his story of how he got into the golf business 41 years ago. His first job was raking stones at the Saugeen Golf Club and he spent some time as a bartender. That year he also went to Guelph University to study.

“I became the Assistant Superintendent and then the Superintendent and for the last 15 of the 21 years I was at Saugeen, I was GM and Superintendent," explained Gravett. "And then Shirley Baechler, the old owner here (Sunset Golf), she sold it to me and the rest is history. So over 40 years in the business.”

Gravett says he's looking forward to playing golf in the summer instead of working and doing a little travelling.
