Zelensky address Parliament; urges NATO to close Ukrainian skies

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky received a standing ovation from all members as he addressed the House of Commons Tuesday morning.

Speaking through a translator and addressing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau by first name, Zelensky tried to paint a picture of what life is like in Ukraine.

"Justin, can you imagine...you and your children [hearing] all these severe explosions?" Zelensky asked. "Bombing of Ottawa's airport and other cities of your wonderful country. Can you imagine that? Can you imagine famous CN Tower in Toronto if it was hit by Russian bombs?"

Zelensky says he wouldn't wish the war in his country on anyone but said it is the reality Ukrainians are living with.

Trudeau told Zelensky his courage is inspiring, prompting the president to place his hand over his heart.

"In the years I've known you I have always thought of you as a champion for democracy," said Trudeau. "And now democracies around the world are lucky to have you as our champion."

Zelensky told Parliament Ukrainians have learned in the last 20 days who their friends are and acknowledged Canada's military and humanitarian aid. He also called on Canada, and especially NATO to do more, including providing air support to close the sky over Ukraine.

"You all need to do more to stop Russia," urged Zelensky. "To protect Ukraine and by doing that protect Europe from Russian threat."

Trudeau vowed Canada's unwavering support and says they have imposed sanctions on 15 more Russian government officials and military elites.
