Royal Canadian Legion wants to expand program to help homeless veterans

The Royal Canadian Legion's Ontario Command is hoping to expand on its "Leave the Streets Behind" program, which aims to end homelessness among veterans.

Vice-President Derek Moore, who lives in Mount Forest, says part of the expansion could include forming regional committees across the province, similar to what has been done in many cities, including Toronto, Ottawa and London.

Moore says a regional committee could include one representative from each of the Legion's seven branches in Wellington County, which would ideally work with the county and police to help veterans in need of support.

According to the Legion's website, the program prides itself in being able to provide accommodation to all veterans that are either homeless or about to be homeless, usually within 48 hours.
