Local police concerned with opioid overdose trends

The Huron County OPP is expressing concern over opioid overdose trends in the county following the deaths of four people.

Police confirm that two males, aged 32 and 43, and two females, aged 43 and 42, all died this month as a result of accidental overdose deaths.

Between January 1st and Christmas Day through 2021, members of the Huron County OPP responded to 32 drug overdose incidents, including 8 fatalities with the majority of those deaths due to opioids.

"These overdoses certainly highlight the fact that the misuse and abuse of controlled substances is highly dangerous and can be deadly. With that being said, we also know that overdose deaths can be preventable if medical attention is received quickly so I would like to remind witnesses to call 9-1-1 and stay with the victim. Don't be afraid, just pick up the phone and call, it could save your friend's life," said Huron OPP Detachment Commander Inspector Jason Younan.

The OPP adds it needs "the public's support and assistance to hold drug traffickers accountable for these deaths."

If you have information please contact the Huron OPP Crime Unit by calling 1-888-310-1122 or 519-482-1677. You can also call Crime Stoppers.
