Huron County receives updated Green Fleet Strategy

Huron County's Climate Change and Energy Specialist has updated the Green Fleet Strategy.

Lily Morrow explained the Green Fleet Strategy outlines criteria to prioritize low carbon, fuel-efficient, and sustainable purchasing practices for the County’s corporate fleet vehicles.

Some councillors expressed concerns about the initial cost of electrical vehicle, but Morrow pointed out that the cost will come down as more people buy them

"There needs to be the time for the initial markets to develop and then they're adopted and more people purchase them and start to drive them and the cost would go down and due to the life cycle of the vehicle because there's reduced fuel and maintenance costs associated with electric vehicles,” she explained.

Morrow also pointed out, as fuel costs continue to go up, electric vehicles look more attractive.

She continued, “That is part of wanting to look at the life cycle cost as well as the life cycle greenhouse gas emissions when we're considering these purchases, because we want to consider all of those things, especially rising fuel costs and carbon tax and everything that is associated and planning on being implemented.”

Morrow says the Green Fleet Strategy will ensure that the County is ready to transition corporate fleet vehicles as the market shifts, and zero-emission vehicles become more readily available.
