Midwestern Ontario sees spike in COVID-19 cases

The Grey Bruce Health unit added seven new cases of COVID-19 Monday, four in Meaford, one in Arran-Elderslie, one in Kincardine, and one in South Bruce. There are 53 active cases. Two residents are currently hospitalized with the virus. 

Huron Perth Public Health saw a jump in cases over the weekend, and added 28 new COVID-19 infections. 10 were located in North Perth, four in Howick, four in Perth East, three in Stratford, two in North Huron, and one each in Central Huron, Huron East, South Huron, West Perth, and St Marys. There are 76 active cases. Five residents are currently hospitalized with the virus. 

Wellington Dufferin Guelph Public Health also saw a spike in cases since Friday. The health unit added 73 new cases, including 16 in Wellington County. There are 36 active cases in Wellington. One resident is currently hospitalized with the virus.

Ontario is reporting 887 new COVID-19 cases today, pushing the seven-day average to 940. The province is also logging three more deaths due to the virus.

Provincial data show 168 COVID-19 patients are in intensive care, though not all hospitals provide updated numbers on weekends. Data also show there have now been at least 13 cases of the new Omicron variant confirmed in Ontario.
