Huron East mayor asks for report about day care use in Vanastra

Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan has asked staff to prepare a report on who is using the Vanastra Day Care Centre.

MacLellan says he's been told that more than 50 per cent of the families that use the Centre in Vanastra live outside of Huron East.

“So I've asked for a report to clarify that information and if there are large numbers of families coming from other municipalities then we either should give priority to families that live in Huron East, or have user agreements with the neighbouring municipalities,” said MacLellan.

He adds there is a waiting list at the Centre now so if they gave priority to Huron East residents, some others might not get in.

But he points out, the program is currently being subsidized by Huron East residents and he believes the cost should be shared by the people using the service.

"At that point, their option is to go and talk to their council and say, you know, we need this service, you don't provide the service, so why don't you, at least help out with the cost of the service so that it's available to us as ratepayers also,” added MacLellan.
