Goderich airport task force releases initial report

A recent report on the Goderich Airport carried some encouraging news but also listed some challenges according to the town's mayor.

The Airport Task Force presented its report at the last council meeting.

John Grace says it identified where the airport fits as a rural entity and set out a plan going forward. But as with anything, finances play a big role in the airport's future.

“We needed to find out whether it is feasible and can it be sustainable over a longer period of time. And it's quite evident that, yes it is, but we are going to have to build partnerships,” said Grace.

The partnerships have to include businesses, neighbouring municipalities and the federal government. But in order to get the support of the government, the other partnerships have to be in place first.

“We need to be able to show that it is not only financially feasible today, but it is and going to be sustainable over years and years and years to come. That's key,” added Grace.

The infrastructure will also have to be improved upon over the next 20 years.

Grace says support from Huron County's Economic Development Board has been instrumental in establishing a connection with neighbouring municipalities.

The next step is for the Task Force to become a committee of Goderich council and that committee will work on building the capacity at the airport.
