OPP encourage safety through Labour Day weekend

The OPP is encouraging motorists and boaters to practice safety this weekend.

Police released statistics to the end of August, saying 176 people have died in a total of 166 collisions on OPP-patrolled roads, adding many were preventable and can be attributed to poor driving. 47 of the cases involved excessive speed and 33 were attributed to an inattentive driver.

Police are also reminding boaters and off-road vehicle riders to make safety a top priority for the final long weekend of the summer. Falling overboard and capsized vessels remain the primary causes in OPP-investigated boating fatalities.

And losing control is a contributing factor in a significant number of off-road vehicle crashes.
