Bruce Peninsula Multisport Race this weekend

The Bruce Peninsula Multisport Race takes place this weekend, presented by Bruce Power.

The Bruce Peninsula Multisport Race (BPMR) is the region’s off-road triathlon that includes a paddling stage instead of swimming. Courses are marked and range from 30km to 90km.

Racing this year will be spread out to two days -- Suntrail Course on Saturday and Owen Sound Subaru Long Course on Sunday -- and the public is invited to support the event by cheering on the racers outside the typical gathering areas.

The event has been held for 10 years by the local non-profit Peninsula Adventure Sports Association (PASA) to raise funds for outdoor sport initiatives on the Bruce Peninsula.  Proceeds from the 2021 event will support a bicycle safety & skills program known as Ride Smart, in conjunction with the OPP and New Hope Community Bikes which expects to hold bike safety clinics across the Bruce Peninsula.

“We’re celebrating our 10th anniversary a year late,” says PASA president Leigh Grigg, “with an event that is really all about the racers. The race will feature a new set of routes with amazing natural scenes and challenges. As is typically the case for the event, exact routes and features of the new racecourse will be unveiled closer to raceday so that people do not start previewing the course, inadvertently crossing onto private property.”

PASA was founded in 2011 and also organizes the Groundhog Jog and the Tobermory Trail Race Weekend.

All courses will start and finish in Wiarton, however spectator attendance is discouraged this year due to COVID-19 pandemic planning.

“Please do not attend the event in Bluewater Park in Wiarton unless you are racing or volunteering,” continues Grigg. “We will do everything we can to integrate crowds in 2022, and we plan to bring back our finish line festival as soon as it’s appropriate. The 2022 event should be on sale very soon"

“We are proud to once again support the Bruce Peninsula Multisport Race and to help raise funds for the Ride Smart program,” said John Peevers, Director of Community and Media Relations, and Economic Development. “This year’s race will look a little different to ensure public safety, but we are happy to see the event proceed this year. Good luck to all the participants!”

“We’re thrilled the event has been given the green light by Grey Bruce Public Health to proceed this summer. In fact the vast majority of our racers signed up prior to the pandemic“ continues Grigg. “While the event will be modified to ensure social distancing, we’re confident participants will enjoy the courses and the fantastic natural features of the Bruce Peninsula as much as ever.”

“We’re still in need of volunteers for both Saturday and/or Sunday, so if you’re looking to get out and enjoy a day supporting a fun community and great cause, send an email to: bpmrvolley@gmail.com ”
