Josh Cassidy, who grew up in Burgoyne, will take part in the 42.2-kilometre race that will loop around Port Elgin, starting at the intersection of Gustavus Street and Waterloo Street and finishing in front of the Port Elgin United Church at the intersection of Bruce Street and Biener Drive.
Cassidy has already met the Paralympic marathon standard, but can increase his ranking and be selected to the Canadian team heading to Tokyo.
Cassidy will be racing Alexandre Dupont (Quebec), Tristan Smyth (British Columbia) and Ben Brown (Nova Scotia). Cassidy competed at the Paralympic Games in 2016, 2012 and 2007, placing a career-best 5th in the 800-metre race in London in 2012.
Cassidy's legs were partially paralyzed due to neuroblastoma cancer in his spine and infant. He won three silver medals at the Toronto ParaPan Am Games, finishing 2nd place in the 800-metre, 1,500-metre and 5,000-metre races.
Bruce Street, Biener Drive, Waterloo Street and Gustavus Street will all be closed for the event, which is scheduled to begin around 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 18th.
