HPPH focus on walk-in vaccine clinics

New walk-in vaccine clinics will be popping up in Huron and Perth counties this week, and health officials are encouraging everyone 12 and older to seize the opportunity.

Medical Officer of Health for the region, Dr. Miriam Klassen, says the health unit is now able to wind down mass vaccination clinics and have a more targeted approach.

“What we wanted to do was get as much immunity in the population as quickly as possible, starting with people who were the most vulnerable. Now we’re getting to a different part in the program so we’re going to modify the way we do things moving forward.”

Dr. Klassen adds 75% of Huron Perth’s eligible population have received at least one dose of vaccine and nearly 50 per cent are fully vaccinated.

“The higher the number of people fully vaccinated, the more potential chains of transmission are broken. We will be more successful in controlling transmission in Step 3, because the virus will not be able to find susceptible hosts.”

As of Wednesday, HPPH was tracking 10 active COVID-19 cases.
