Work helps lower arsenic levels in water in Dungannon area

The Mayor of Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh says with some Federal funding and the help of the Walkerton Clean Water Centre, they've able to resolve the arsenic problem in the wells in the Dungannon area.

Glen McNeil says the arsenic levels have been above acceptable levels for several years and they reached out to the Ministry of the Environment a few years ago.

“We have had excellent co-operation from them," said McNeil. "And they coordinated with Walkerton Clean Water to address the situation and Walkerton Clean Water was able to install some filtration to address the situation.”

There was also a recommendation to install a reservoir.

"The purpose for that is to draw the water out of the well as level, steady flow as possible and not a high level, because that would minimize the amount of arsenic that is released from the rock formation,” added McNeil.

Under Health Canada's Guidelines for Canadian Drinking Water Quality, the acceptable arsenic level is 0.010 mg/L.

Between the filtration and the reservoir, McNeil says levels in the Dungannon area wells are now below that benchmark.
