The Grey Bruce Health Unit posted another double digit increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in the area Sunday.
There were 22 new cases reported, seven in Saugeen First Nation; six in Owen Sound; two in Kincardine; two in Meaford; and one each in Georgian Bluffs, Hanover, Saugeen Shores, and South Bruce Peninsula.
There are 196 active cases in the two counties, 11 of which are variants of concern.
There are also 11 people hospitalized with the virus including three people who were transferred outside of Grey and Bruce.
In a release Sunday, the health unit says the rising number of cases is being driven by unvaccinated people participating in two kinds of activities. That includes people going to private gatherings like birthday parties where parents are allowing young children to play with others while sick.
The second driver is people buying and using substances from people infected with COVID-19. Initially the transmission was happening among people without proper housing but now even substance users without housing challenges are seeing transmission.
Public Health officials are urging everyone to get vaccinated and have walk-in, pop-up, and drive-through clinics planned every day this week.
