HPPH urging people to make sure they get their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine

With more COVID-19 vaccine clinics coming on line in Huron and Perth, health officials would like to see more people get their first dose.

For the reopening plan, the province is keeping an eye on the 18-plus population.

In Huron and Perth, 74 percent of that group has received one dose but Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Miriam Klassen, says that number is starting to plateau.

"We know there are more people out there that just haven't booked an appointment yet or haven't found the time yet," said Dr. Klassen. "Again there are more clinics, there are more pharmacies where you can get your first dose and the more people that are vaccinated the more likely we will succeed in opening safely."

The second dose rate continues to steadily climb and is at 33 percent.

"What you will notice is that the one dose group is not budging much while the second dose number is rising quickly. So we're very happy that people are getting their second doses and we needed to get more people to get their first dose," Dr. Klassen added.

And with the province's reopening plan moving into Step 2 Wednesday, public health will be keeping an eye on more movement.

Especially with some neighbouring regions having higher case counts.

As of Wednesday, there were just 11 active cases in Huron and Perth but areas such as Bruce and Grey and Waterloo Region, have seen a steady rise in cases. A report from Grey Bruce Public Health late Wednesday put the active case count in that region at 157 active cases.

"We're all going to have to continue to follow public health measures," said Dr. Klassen. "Whether we're vaccinated or not, these measures will continue in some form in all public venues would be my prediction."

Now that the calendar has flipped to July, Huron Perth Public Health is trying to take advantage of a steady supply of COVID-19 vaccines, mainly Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.

"We've taken many steps to ensure we have enough staff including internal redeployment. We also reached out to our partners and said 'let's do this', one big push in the summer to get as many of these doses in as we can," Dr. Klassen pointed out. "And we know we need so many volunteers for clinics and they assist us in scheduling them and we make sure everybody is trained."

COVID-19 clinics have been set up to the end of July with the newest appointments available the week of July 26 in Exeter, Listowel, Goderich and Stratford.
