Huron County recognizes two tragedies by lowering flags

Huron County and many of its municipalities were flying flags at half-mast this week.

Warden Glen McNeil says they wanted to recognize two particularly disturbing events. McNeil says the first was the unmarked graves of over 200 children at a former residential school in Kamloops, B. C. And the second, very soon after that, the murder of four members of a Muslim family in London.

“Huron County both respects our indigenous, and wanted to recognize the travesty that occurred there and also to indicate our support for the Muslin community,” said McNeil.

“Specifically in A-C-W we reviewed our flag policy because we wanted it to be flexible enough to recognize any travesty like this that happens and act appropriately.”

McNeil says they didn't want their policy to be so rigid and carved in stone that it excluded a situation they hadn't anticipated. He says every situation has to be treated as a separate event.
