Kincardine family devastated by loss of two businesses

A Facebook message from the owners of the Akima House Restaurant and Sutton Park Inn in Kincardine says it was heartbreaking to see their family business go up in flames yesterday.

The Kim family says they are blessed that everyone is safe.

The family says it was heartbreaking to see the destruction after 23 years of joy, struggle, hard work, memories and lasting friendships.

The message goes on to thank emergency responders for their hard work and bravery. And thanks neighbouring businesses for their support.

Kincardine fire were called out just before 2pm, and when learned flames were visible, summoned in Ripley Huron and Saugeen Shores mutual aid partners. Bruce Power also sent down equipment for support.

Kincardine Fire Chief Brad LeMaich says there is millions of dollars in damage.

He says 40 guest rooms, along with a couple of suits above the swimming pool were completely destroyed.

"There is one wing of the hotel with 20 rooms that's still standing, but does have some significant fire and heat damage," he explained.

He said the lobby, restaurant, kitchen, lounge and owners' residence is standing and sound, but has light smoke and water damage.

The damage is so severe, the cause of the fire may never be known, but LeMaich said it is not suspicious.

"Due to the level of damage destruction, there's very little to investigate. We do know the are o f origin, we do have a possible contributor to origin. we firmly believe it's accidental," he added.
