Support groups working with immigrants through COVID vaccine process

A Huron County Immigration Partnership Support Officer says finding out how to get their COVID vaccine can be a challenging process for newcomers to Canada.

And it is tougher if they're still struggling with a new language.

Hana Aria says they recently hosted a virtual vaccine workshop, facilitated by Huron Perth Public Health, to address that problem.

"So the information session was held," said Aria. "So following that we put together about ten questions and we just got them translated into Arabic and Spanish due to popular demand."

She explains the process for newcomers is that same as it is for residents and if they're having trouble with the forms, they can get help from a settlement worker, through the YMCA.

"So, of course anyone with higher risk, if anyone is older, they obviously get priority, but it's the same age groups, it goes by your level of risk. If there's someone who's pregnant, they're obviously going to be prioritizes above, but it's the same process," added Aria.

Aria adds they also realized several newcomers who are isolated and not really well-connected with their new communities yet, might not have known about the workshop. So they've made the list available at all of the county's library branches and she says she's hoping to get it up on the Local Immigration Partnership web site in the near future.
