OPP in Huron Perth lay numerous seatbelt charges

Perth County OPP laid ten seatbelt charges during the Spring Seatbelt Campaign over the long weekend, while Huron County OPP charged 34 drivers for failing to buckle up.

The Huron County number ranks second highest out of 14 West Region OPP Detachments.

From April 02 to April 05 2021, OPP officers dedicated patrol time to seatbelt enforcement and a variety of other Highway Traffic Act violations.

Huron County OPP investigated a total of six reportable crashes during the seatbelt campaign with one of them being a fatal crash that claimed the life of senior from Goderich. There was also a three-vehicle crash in Goderich on Easter Monday and four vehicle-deer related crashes.

Perth County OPP also laid other charges, including stunt driving, as well as Cannabis Control Act and Liquor Licence Act charges.

A media release says a lack of seatbelt use attributed to 55 people dying on OPP patrolled roads last year. The OPP wants people to remember that at any given second an aggressive, impaired or distracted driver can collide with their vehicle, subjecting the body of an unrestrained driver or passenger to a level of crash force from which few people survive
