Zero increase in municipal portion of Goderich taxes

Goderich council is one step closer to approving this year's budget which will include a zero percent increase in the municipal section of residents' tax bills.

“We did approve it on Monday night, in principle. It'll come back in a formal document, with a bylaw. But for all intents and purposed, the Goderich budget is delivered and with no Goderich municipal increase on the taxes,” said Mayor John Grace.

Grace says another feature of the budget was the removal of the subclass discount for Industrial and Commercial Vacant and Excess Land tax classes for municipal purposes.

“The Province implemented it, the county has implemented it, it is now coming down to the local municipalities and it's pushing that assessment onto the industrial properties and commercial and giving some relief from the residential,” added Grace.

He notes that it also provides a small incentive for the owners of vacant industrial and commercial properties to do something with those properties rather than leave them vacant.
