Goderich joins municipalities in asking for Gravenhurst fire training centre to remain open

Goderich council has joined municipalities all over the Province in supporting a motion to keep the fire training station in Granvenhurst open.

It was announced last year that the training centre would be closed and the official closing date of March 31st was announced earlier this month. The centre had been training fire fighters from all over the Province for the last seventy years, although there hasn't been any training there since the pandemic broke out.

Goderich Mayor, John Grace, says his council unanimously voted to keep the station open.

"When you think about all the rural communities across Ontario, that's pretty important to have a training base like that. So council supported it 100 per cent, that these types of things need to be supported by the Provincial government and need to stay open."

In the future, the training for fire fighters will be done at regional centres or online.
