GBHU issues an opioid overdose alert

There have been reports of two near fatal drug poisonings Friday, both in Hanover.

The substance involved in both events involved a purple product assumed as Fentanyl or Carfentanil, according to the police.

In both cases, Hanover Police say they administered Naloxone, and saved the lives of both individuals, allowing EMS time to provide further life saving measures.

Police, along with the Grey Bruce Health Unit, are warning any residents who use “street drugs” of the risks involved, as they are at “significant risk of overdose” due to the local street drug supply potentially containing the highly toxic drug Fentanyl and/or Carfentanil.

GBHU says to avoid overdoses, they advise not to use drugs alone, avoid mixing different drugs, going slow and knowing your tolerance, and carrying a Naloxone kit.

“The supply on the streets is toxic, it is killing people at a rate that really does concern me”, says Public Health Manager Ian Reich. “Friends, family, police, public and service providers of people that use drugs, please be aware, please be on alert, and have Naloxone on hand, and have plenty of it with you, and please call 911 in the event of any suspected overdose.”.
