Owen Sound man charged following hit and run

Owen Sound police say a 67-year-old woman was treated for minor injuries after being struck by a car on Wednesday.

Officers were called to 9th Street East at 3rd Avenue East around 11 a.m. for a vehicle crash.

According to police, a driver struck the victim in a Mazda 3, causing her to fall to the ground, and fled the scene. She was taken to Grey Bruce Health Services by paramedics and was later released.

Witnesses provided police with evidence which led to the identity of the driver. A 47-year-old man was located on the upper east side of the city later that afternoon, and taken into custody.

The man is being charged with failing to stop after an accident contrary to the criminal code. He also faces additional charges under the highway traffic act including, driving a vehicle without a license, operating an unsafe vehicle, and driving with no insurance contrary to the compulsory automobile insurance act.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court sometime in March.

Police are thanking the witnesses for assisting the woman who was hit, as well as providing information that helped lead to an arrest.
