Preventing flooding in Harriston will be expensive

Minto council got a clear picture of what it's going to take to prevent flooding in Harriston; and it's going to be expensive. The Maitland River has seriously flooded Harriston regularly over the past 100 years.

Depending on how much work is done the cost could range from $2-million to $38-million, and at the high end include diverting the Maitland around Harriston. The option of "doing nothing" will result in millions in damages.

As Minto council heard the results of the flood study Tuesday, one thing was clear, the full project that could take 20 years to complete, and it can't happen without federal and provincial funding.

The entire flood mitigation report is on the Minto website.
