County exploring development of supportive affordable housing program

The Director of Social and Property Services for Huron County says they're in the exploratory stages of developing a supportive program for individuals who require affordable housing with support.

Barbara Hall explains, supports would be offered as part of the design of this program.

"Supports would be offered as part of the design of this program, in terms of mental health support, it could be physical support, it could be supports that offer life skills, what it would take to enable a tenant to live independently within a unit."

Hall says the idea behind supportive housing is to have a more permanent solution.

"The idea to supportive housing is to have a more permanent solution on the housing continuum for individuals who may have been homeless and to have an opportunity for an affordable unit that has supports built into it in terms of agencies that may assist that particular individual in retaining a successful tenancy."

Hall says they're still in the very early stages of exploring the possibility of developing the program at this time.
