Arena ice decisions vary in Huron County

Some local municipalities are taking out the ice at local arenas.

North Huron made the decision earlier this month. Goderich and Huron East will also be taking out the ice.

But in Bluewater, the decision has been made to keep the ice in one arena.

In the case of Bayfield, it is a public-private partnership between the municipality and the Bayfield Facility Initiative Team.

And marketing director Jeff Kish points out their operating costs are not the same as those of a municipally-run facility.

"But there's still plenty of time left in the winter season to offer skating to our community, so it really made sense to us to keep it in. And we believe the cost to maintain it while we're locked out is much less than the loss to the community if we took it out," said Kish.

"And we're doing a lot of that on volunteer and community support, so our operating expenses as it relates to the facility is probably less than a municipally-run operation, which gives us the opportunity to sort of hold and wait until the lock down is turned off and we can resume our activities again."

The plan is to keep the ice in the Bayfield arena until the end of March, if the lockdown orders are lifted.
