Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine to arrive in Grey, Bruce at end of January

Doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine will be in the Grey and Bruce region in the last week of January.

How many doses is unknown.

"We have confirmation from the Ministry that we will be receiving the first shipment of Pfizer vaccine the last week of January," Dr. Ian Arra told CKNX News. He is the Medical Officer of Health for Grey and Bruce.

"And that is relatively a great success, knowing that we are a low risk area. As you know, the criteria to distribute the vaccine in the province is based on risk and to the hot spots first."

Details of a plan submitted to the province were revealed earlier this week and according to Dr. Arra, it paid dividends. It backing from municipalities, health care partners along with businesses such as Chapman's Ice Cream and Bruce Power.

"The municipalities are key, they play a role in many, many things. Private business, it depends on the project and in this one, without having that freezer, the logistics, it might be quite problamatic," added Dr. Arra.

The vaccine has to be stored at minus-70 degrees Celsius.

At this time, the plan calls for the main hub to distribute the vaccine to be at the Grey Bruce Health Unit. A second hub would be set up at the Davidson Centre in Kincardine.

But that will depend on the number of doses that are received.
