Class Order issued in Huron Perth to combat rising COVID-19 cases

The Medical Officer of Health for Huron Perth Public Health has issued a Class Order under Section 22 of Ontario’s Health Protection and Promotion Act.

This is a legal measure that authorizes the health unit to enforce individuals to comply with public health instructions.

The key focus of this Order is to ensure people who have been told to self-isolate or quarantine by public health or a health care provider are doing so.

Those who do not comply can be given a ticket under the Reopening Ontario Act with a fine of $750 per day. You could be charged and fined up to $5,000 per day under the Health Protection and Promotion Act.

"This is a Class Order that applies to every single person who has been asked to self isolate because they are either a case or a high risk contact," said Dr. Miriam Klassen. "It can now be enforced not just by public health inspectors, but under new regulation can be also enforced by police, OPP, and municipal by-law officers."

"The numbers are going in the wrong direction. We're getting into the holiday season and this is an additional tool for us to help stop the spread."

The order came into effect at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, November 29th and applies to all residents of Huron and Perth counties.
