COVID-19 cases spike upward Monday in Midwestern Ontario

A COVID-19 outbreak at Cedarcroft Retirement Home in Stratford has claimed the lives of four more people.

There have been 44 positive cases in residents, and 18 in staff. 34 residents are still sick, as are 13 employees.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Miriam Klassen said 20 new cases of COVID19 were confirmed Monday, and there are now 72 active cases.  There have now been 13 deaths in Huron-Perth associated with COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic earlier this year.

An outbreak also continues at Knollcrest Lodge Long Term Care in Perth East, where just one staff member tested positive for the novel Coronavirus. In All there are 51 active cases in Stratford. There are 17 active cases in Perth East, two active cases in North Perth, and two in Bluewater.

There are no outbreaks in schools or daycare in Huron Perth.

Public health in Wellington County reported 30 new cases for a total of 55 active cases, with two people in Wellington County hospitals. Wellington County is now in the Orange restrict level, which is third highest of for alert levels. Restrictions include last call for bars and restaurants at 9pm.

The spike can partly be attributed to the Old Order Mennonite community in the northern part of county, and schools and churches have been shut down in that Mennonite community after COVID-19 outbreaks were linked to a school and a wedding of over 100 people.

The Grey Bruce Public Health Unit reported three new cases Monday, all located in Southgate.  There are 33 active cases in Grey Bruce.

Medical Officer of Health Dr. Ian Arra said The Grey Bruce Health Unit is working with Cedarville Breezes Parochial School Leaders and associated Community Leaders to address a probable case of COVID-19 associated with the school.  Dr. Arra added a mutual decision was made to close the small-sized school for 14 days out of an abundance of caution.

He stressed that while there is a probable case associated with a school, so far public health assessment shows the case did not acquire the infection from within the school setting. Currently there are no outbreaks; that is, evidence of transmission from person to person, in any schools or childcare centres, in Grey Bruce. No bus routes of any schools are involved with this case.
